1      Introduction

1.1   Cultural Reverence

1.1.1   We live in a culture that reveres scientific inquiry and achievement yet most of the population does not understand the language and methods of scientific insight. For example we are quick to quote this or that scientific study that proves our point without knowing the mathematics (Statistics) or even whether the research Design and Methodology warrant our polemic. Advertisers are quick to exploit our scientific reverence by dishing up a soup of research studies that prove their products superiority.

1.2   Math Gene

1.2.1   There is a good reason for this lack of knowledge on our part. The learning curve is steep and not all of us have the MATH GENE if there is one. It doesn’t mean we can’t learn or that we are stupid but it does mean we have to be patient and consistent in our efforts.

1.3   Why bother?

1.3.1   Our culture with its emphasis on scientific proof simply will not buy the claim that massage helps sick people unless we prove it with a body of research. Sure, everyone knows it feels good but that is clearly not enough reason to pay out insurance claims to help a person get better. Consider insurance payment for massage therapy as societies approval stamp that massage therapy is of real value. It also represents an improvement in our collective standard of living.

2      A Statistical Journey-A Cautionary Note

2.1   Which Way is UP?

2.1.1   Interpreting Scientific Research requires a reasonable mastery of the language of mathematics and the basic principles of research design. Otherwise, it is easy to see significance where there is none or become confused and discouraged by the seemingly endless studies that contradict each other. There are some excellent Web sites which are referenced under projects of the main menu bar at the Anatomy Facts Web Site and some of which I have listed below.
